Michael Devers gave me a great book; “Ego Is The Enemy” by Ryan Holiday. This is a terrific read for anyone, but particularly for high achievers who have found themselves suddenly successful. I found it fascinating because of the author’s ability to see through the cloak of ego. Based upon his experiences, I agree with a bunch of what he wrote in the book.

One of the things that aligns closely with some of the speeches I give about youth relates to tuition. There are only two kinds of tuition, high priced tuition and low-priced tuition. In quoting Otto von Bismark, the Chancellor of the German Empire who died in 1898, Holiday quotes a very similar sentiment on page 216 of that book.

“These’s a quote from Bismark that says, in effect, any fool can learn from experience.

The trick is to learn from other people’s experience.”

One way that resembles my speech is that I place experience by doing in the high tuition category. Experience is a very effective, but harsh teacher and the tuition is high and the scars don’t fade quickly! Conversely learning from others is virtually prepaid tuition and the price is your ability to restrain yourself and listen!

Here’s to a fruitful 2024 where we can all be low tuition students!
