Destination Inspiration

I recently went on a cruise up the inside passage of Alaska! My wife Sarah and I went with another couple to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. This should have been done in 2020, but the trip was cancelled by the Covid 19 pandemic. So, in reality, it was a 43rd Anniversary celebration with two of the best friends a couple could ever wish for. You will see more about the cruise experience onboard the Discovery Princess in later blogs.

What I have come to discover is that the focus of a cruise can be excess. You feel pampered because you are pampered. There is too much of everything available. Too much food, too much drink, too much to buy and just plain too much. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the cruise experience, but the buffet easily became my nemesis. The free and always available ice cream is a terrible temptation for all who love our ice cream! I needed to exercise some discipline on this cruise so thankfully I found they have a terrific gym facility onboard the ship. I am grateful that I chose well when it came to working out and exercised a bit of self-control with the ice cream!

Every time I went to work out in the mid-morning, (too much sleep) I saw two ladies working out as well. There they were again putting in so much effort in their workouts that I was at first ashamed of my effort. Then shortly thereafter, I was inspired. I began to work out harder and longer just to try and keep up with them. Their speed on the treadmill or elliptical was daunting. The number of sit ups they did was crazy. The wight lift reps they performed were insane. Yet, I did more because they did more. Yes, they inspired me.

As it turns out they were a mother and daughter from Windsor, ON, Canada. And at the risk of it being weird, I asked for them to pose for a picture. They were incredibly nice and grateful just like most of the Canadians I have dealt with for over 40 years! Their cruise destination was the Great Alaskan Coastline, but their effort helped me reach my destination …. Inspiration. Thanks ladies for pushing me!
